About

Joanna Chao was born in Taichung, Taiwan, and is a prizewinner of the Puigcerdà International Piano Competition, Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition, Kingsville International Young Performer's Competition, and Bergen Philharmonic Young Artist Competition. Her orchestral appearances include performances with the Moscow Philharmonic, New Britain Symphony, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, ECO Ensemble, Fremont-Newark Philharmonic, the College of New Jersey Orchestra, and California Youth Symphony. She has also been featured on television in performances on KKHI and KQED. As a chamber musician she has been heard with the New York Philharmonic Chamber Ensembles, on the Marcella Sembrich Music Series, La Gesse Foundation Concert Series, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago Chamber Concert Series, and at the Manchester Music Festival, Thy Chamber Music Festival, and Sarasota Music Festival. She is a member of Argento Chamber Ensemble and has taught piano, keyboard, and chamber music courses at Juilliard, the College of New Jersey, Fordham University, the Puigcerdà Festival, Yves Nat Summer Festival, Summer Music West, and Hartwick College Summer Music Festival and Institute. Formerly Peabody Conservatory piano teaching assistant and Juilliard ear training teaching fellow from 1993 to 1995, she has been on Juilliard’s Pre-College faculty since 1999. Chao holds a BM and MM from Juilliard and a DMA from Peabody Institute of Music. She studied with Oxana Yablonskaya, Ellen Mack, and Jerome Lowenthal and participated in master classes with Murray Perahia and Leon Fleisher.
