As part of Carnegie Hall’s Ancient Paths, Modern Voices: A Festival Celebrating Chinese Culture, Juilliard presented an evening of works by Tan Dun, conducted by the composer himself. Juilliard cello students performed Secret Land for 12 cellos, a piece evocative of traditional Chinese music. The work spotlighted all 12 players in spirited solo passages and was accented by verbal shouts. Other events featured the completion of Bernard Haitink’s residency at the School, the opening of Handel’s Ariodante, a concert and reception welcoming the Juilliard Manuscript Collection, the American Brass Quintet’s 50th anniversary season, the Susanna Phillips debut recital, and several more.
