The Focus! 2010 festival, titled “Music at the Center: Composing an American Mainstream,” highlighted mid-20th-century American composers and honored the centennials of Samuel Barber and former Juilliard president William Schuman. On January 25, the New Juilliard Ensemble, led by Joel Sachs and featuring special guest tabla player Ray Spiegel, performed Henry Cowell’s Symphony No. 13, “Madras.” The program also included Schuman’s The Young Dead Soldiers: Lamentation with soloists Catherine Hancock (soprano) and Molly Norcross (French horn), as well as works by David Diamond and Hall Overton. Other notable recent events included Christian McBride and the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra, a master class by Fabio Biondi, the New York Woodwind Quintet, Juilliard Opera's Transformations, the ninth annual Chamberfest, among others.
