Juilliard Choral Union

The Juilliard Choral Union, now in its seventh season, is a community-based symphonic chorus directed by Judith Clurman (left), Juilliard's director of choral activities. Dedicated to achieving the highest level of choral performance, the Choral Union is comprised of volunteer singers from the metropolitan area as well as Juilliard students, faculty, and staff members. Performances, which are often in collaboration with the Juilliard Orchestra or Juilliard Symphony, usually take place at The Juilliard School, Alice Tully Hall, or Carnegie Hall. The Choral Union has made guest appearances at other renowned New York cultural institutions, including the N.Y.C. Ballet for its production of Chichester Psalms, and Lincoln Center's American Songbook.

The 2006-07 Season

The Choral Union is now holding auditions for the 2006-07 season, which will participate in concerts including Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, at Avery Fisher Hall, with James DePreist, conductor; a holiday program in the Peter Jay Sharp Theater including Bach's Cantata No. 140 (Wachet auf, ruft uns die stimme) and holiday selections, including works by Vaughn Williams and David Willcocks, Judith Clurman, conductor; an evening of Richard Rodgers with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, Marvin Hamlisch, conductor; Bach Cantatas BWV 4 and BWV 176 performed by a chamber chorus at Alice Tully Hall, Judith Clurman, conductor; and on September 11, Judith Clurman will conduct the Juilliard Orchestra and Choral Union in a community sing of Mozart's Requiem at Carnegie Hall, commemorating the fifth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Rehearsal and Audition Information

All volunteer singers are selected by audition and enroll through the Evening Division of The Juilliard School. The chorus also welcomes all Juilliard students, faculty and staff. The size of ensembles varies based on repertoire needs for each performance. Requirements for auditioning include previous choral experience, sight-reading ability and availability to meet the schedule. For the audition, singers should prepare an art song or aria of his or her choice. Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings throughout the concert season. Some additional rehearsals are held, and there is a daytime dress rehearsal for each performance. To arrange for an audition, please e-mail us at choralunion@juilliard.edu.
