Distinguished pianist Seymour Lipkin performs an all-Beethoven recital on Tuesday, October 11 at 8 PM in Paul Hall, celebrating his 25 years at Juilliard. He performs the Sonata Op. 2, No. 2 in A Major; Sonata Op. 78 in F-sharp Major; and Sonata Op. 106 in B-flat Major (“Hammerklavier”). Mr. Lipkin has recorded the complete 32 sonatas of Beethoven (Newport Classic label), which may also be heard on a single MP3 disc; he also has recorded the complete Schubert sonatas and other major works. The recital is part of Juilliard’s Daniel Saidenberg Faculty Recital Series.

Seymour Lipkin studied with Rudolf Serkin and Mieczyslaw Horszowski at the Curtis Institute of Music. Having won the prestigious Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition at age 19, he went on to appear with all of America’s ‘top five’ orchestras: the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, The Philadelphia, Cleveland, and Chicago, as well as many other major American ensembles. Mr. Lipkin has been active in chamber music and has performed at the Marlboro Music Festival, the Spoleto Festivals (both in Italy and the U.S.), and the Norfolk Festival. He has performed with Jascha Heifetz, Oscar Shumsky, Uto Ughi, Arnold Steinhardt, William Primrose, David Soyer, Lawrence Lesser, and toured the U.S., Europe, and South America with the Guarneri Quartet. Mr. Lipkin is artistic director of the Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival in Blue Hill, Maine and has been a member of the Curtis Institute of Music faculty for 40 years. He joined the Juilliard faculty in 1987.
