Reflections

Last spring, we asked alumni from various decades to share memories of formative experiences from their Juilliard days with us, and to reflect upon what aspects of their Juilliard education have shaped their lives and careers. We've been featuring the responses individually in our Alumni Reflections column throughout the year—and conclude our centennial series with a collection of half a dozen more. We thank all who responded to our questionnaire, and regret that limited space has kept us from including everyone.

JoAnn Falletta
Conductor
"At Juilliard, we were always surrounded by the best: extraordinary faculty, gifted students, incredible music-making."

Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg
Violinist
"It became clear to me early on what I would excel at: cafeteria!"

Paul Taylor
Dancer and choreographer
"What was behind my choice to attend Juilliard? A college degree (to please my mother)."

Sara Ramirez
Actor
"What I learned at Juilliard reminds me of how important it is to be grateful for all the creative people I have the honor of working with."

Neil Shicoff
Tenor
"The first day at Juilliard was a revelation for me. … I realized that there was a lot more to music than simply singing."

Marvin Hamlisch
Composer
"When I entered the classroom of Juilliard's Prep Division … I was quickly made aware that my status as number one was in jeopardy."
