Visiting Juilliard

Body

Visiting Juilliard offers you the chance to observe, ask questions, and experience the atmosphere that makes the School unique. Juilliard's welcoming community encourages prospective applicants and their families to visit and take a tour.

PERFORMANCES

While visiting The Juilliard School, you may wish to attend one of the many student performances. Performances are open to the public; the majority of which are free of charge. Please visit the Calendar of Events to search for performances that will coincide with your visit. Please note, ticketing for each event is unique and is handled by the Box Office. We ask that you contact the Box Office for additional ticketing information.

TOURS

General tours of The Juilliard School are available free of charge to prospective applicants (students applying within the next 2-3 years) and up to two guests. Tours are offered most weekday mornings, Monday through Friday (from September through May) and last approximately one hour. Tours open for registration 30 days before the tour date and appear on the search page 60 days in advance.

Currently enrolled Juilliard students lead tours of classrooms, practice rooms, and performance spaces, as available, and are happy to answer your questions. They also share their personal experiences as Juilliard students, which can be especially informative to prospective applicants and their families.

Due to limited space availability, parties are limited to three people each (two guests per prospective applicant). Reservations are required in advance. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate "walk-in" parties.

  • General Tours — the tour will cover all three divisions (Dance, Drama, and Music)

Tours of The Juilliard School will not be offered on the following days:

  • August 18, 2014 – September 7, 2014 (Orientation)
  • November 26, 2014 – November 30, 2014 (Thanksgiving)
  • December 20, 2014 – January 11, 2015 (Winter Recess)
  • February 28, 2015 – March 15, 2015 (Auditions & Midterm Recess)
  • May 4, 2015 – May 8, 2015 (Music Jury Week)
  • May 18, 2015 – May 24, 2015 (Commencement Week)

The Office of Admissions also offers prospective Dance and Drama applicants (students applying within the next 2-3 years) the opportunity to take division-specific tours. These tours provide visitors with a concentrated experience and will allow guests to hear directly from someone with first-hand knowledge of the training offered. Please note that start times and dates for these tours vary. The tour will visit the same spaces as the General Tour so we ask that you please do not register for both a General Tour and a division-specific tour.

  • Dance Tours – Tours led by a representative from the Dance Division
  • Drama Tours – Tours led by a representative from the Drama Division

GROUP TOURS

Group tours are available on a very limited basis during the academic year (September – May). Group tours may be requested by submitting a Group Tour Request Form. Requests should be submitted no less than three weeks and no more than two months in advance of the desired visit.

Because group tours are offered free of charge and are intended solely for prospective students, requests must be submitted by a teacher or group leader. We do not arrange tours for travel agents or tour companies.

The Office of Admissions may be able to arrange a private group tour as follows:

  1. Monday through Friday.
  2. Between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  3. The group must be between 10 and 30 persons, including students and chaperones. As we have only one tour guide available, we are not able to divide larger groups.
  4. The majority of tour participants are seeking a post-secondary education in the performing arts (i.e. Dance, Drama, Classical Music, Jazz Studies).
  5. Tour participants are applying to college within the next 3 years.

CLASS OBSERVATIONS (for prospective applicants only)

For prospective Dance or Music students who plan to apply to the School within the next 1-2 years, arrangements to observe a class may be made on a case-by-case basis. Availability of class observations is limited, and is possible on weekdays during the academic year only. Requests should be submitted according to the guidelines below at least two weeks in advance, and will need to be confirmed by the Office of Admissions prior to arrival. Please note that due to limited space in classrooms, groups cannot be accommodated for class observations.

DANCE (late September – early May) — To request an observation of a dance technique class (ballet or modern), please read the guidelines and complete the request form available here.

DRAMA — The Juilliard Drama Division has created a safe environment in which students can learn, practice, and take artistic risks. The intimate nature of the training and class size make it extremely difficult to observe these classes. Therefore, the observation of Drama Division classes cannot be arranged. The Office of Admissions plans special “Spotlight” events and recommends that you register for a Spotlight by visiting the On Campus Events page and plan your visit around an event that may be of interest to you.

MUSIC (October – April) — Due to the small size of the School and schedule of classes and rehearsals, opportunities for guest observations are limited. We are generally unable to offer observations of orchestra or chamber music rehearsals. The Office of Admissions plans special “Spotlight” events and recommends that you register for a Spotlight by visiting the On Campus Events page and plan your visit around an event that may be of interest to you.

Examples of typical class observations are listed below.

  • Prospective Orchestral Conducting applicants (MM, GD and AD only) may have the opportunity to observe a Conducting Lab, if the visit falls on a Friday; please note that observation opportunities are very limited
  • Prospective Piano applicants who are visiting on a Wednesday may be able to attend Piano Forum
  • Prospective Composition applicants who visit on a Monday may have the opportunity to observe a Composers’ Forum
  • Prospective Jazz Studies applicants may be able to observe a rehearsal or Jazz class
  • Prospective Vocal Arts Students may have the opportunity to observe a Vocal Literature or Diction class
  • Other prospective applicants may be able to observe Music History or Theory class

To request an observation of a music class:

  1. Send an email to Fadwa Hayes, Administrative Assistant, at [email protected].
  2. Include the prospective applicant’s name, age, and a brief description of any prior training. We ask for this information to insure that priority is given to candidates likely to apply within the next 1-2 years. Due to the volume of observation requests we are unable to accommodate all who apply.
  3. Include the desired date of visit, with an alternate date if possible. Requests should be made at least two weeks in advance. All requests will receive an email response.
