Application Fee

The application fee is nonrefundable. Make check or money order payable to The Juilliard School. All checks must be drawn on a U.S. bank. Payment by credit card is only available for applications submitted online. Application fee waivers are available only for eligible undergraduate applicants.

  • Jazz Studies: $60, must be received by December 1, 2011.
  • Music Performace: $60, ($110 if applying to both A.D. and D.M.A.), must be received by December 1, 2011.
  • Opera Studies: $60, must be received by November 1, 2011.

Transcripts

Documentation of post-secondary schooling is an essential component of the application process. Applicants must supply official transcripts of all previous college / conservatory / university studies demonstrating scholastic competence sufficient to succeed in course work at the graduate level.

  • Jazz Studies and Music Performance applicants should send the official transcripts of school records by February 15, 2012.
  • Opera Studies applicants should send the official transcripts of school records by December 15, 2011.

Official transcripts must be in a sealed envelope, or be sent directly from the issuing institution. This applies to U.S. and international applicants. Pre-screened majors should wait to receive pre-screening results before sending transcripts.

For graduates of foreign institutions: equivalency information and translations may be obtained through World Education Services, (212) 966-6311. Official transcripts with equivalency information and translations, as needed, are due by the dates listed above.

Current Juilliard College Students do not need to request Juilliard transcripts be sent to Admissions.

Formerly enrolled Juilliard College Students do not need to request Juilliard transcripts be sent to Admissions, however, they should provide transcripts for any other institutions attended after their tenure at Juilliard.

Proof of English Language Proficiency

The ability to speak, read, and understand English fluently is an important factor in admissions decisions. A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) will be required of applicants for whom English is not the native language, regardless of citizenship.

Minimum score requirements* for Artist Diploma applicants:

*Opera Studies applicants must submit an official TOEFL score by the deadline below. A minimum of 73 is preferred.
  1. Applicants for whom English is not a native language must submit an official copy of their TOEFL scores by the deadlines below. Photocopies, faxes, and student copies are not acceptable.
    • Jazz Studies and Music Performance: February 15, 2012.
    • Opera Studies: December 15, 2011.
  2. Applicants will not be admitted without an official score on file which meets the minimum guidelines for admission (see above grid).
    • Jazz Studies and Music Performance applicants should take a TOEFL by January 2012 in order to have the score submitted to the Admissions Office by February 15.
    • Opera Studies applicants should take a TOEFL by October 2011 in order to have the score submitted to the Admissions Office by December 15.
    • If you submitted a TOEFL score report to your undergraduate or graduate institution that meets our minimum requirements, you may ask that institution's Registrar to send to us directly an official photocopy of the score report in a sealed school envelope. It is important to note that not all schools will release this information and applicants who wish to pursue this option should research it well in advance so as to leave themselves time to take another TOEFL, if necessary.
  3. Juilliard does not grant exemptions to the English Language Proficiency requirement based on an applicant’s citizenship status in the U.S. However, applicants who will have studied full-time for at least six years at English-speaking institutions (prior to enrolling at Juilliard) may be considered for a waiver of the TOEFL score, with approval from the Office of Admissions. To apply for a waiver of the TOEFL:
    • Submit a letter explaining your academic background and enclose official transcripts totaling six years of study in English* (include all college and high school transcripts as needed) by the appropriate application deadline (November 1 or December 1). *It is acceptable for the applicant to be in the sixth year of study if currently enrolled in an English-speaking institution. Transcripts should show strong grades in academic classes.
    • The letter and all transcripts must be included in the same envelope; transcripts that are received separately from the letter will not be reviewed and the waiver request will be considered incomplete.
    • Incomplete or late requests will not be considered, without exception.
    • The Associate Dean for Admissions will review all complete waiver requests and will respond via e-mail.
    • Applicants who are not granted a waiver will be required to submit an official TOEFL score by one of the deadlines noted above, and are required to attend an English Language Interview during the audition period (see below).
    • Applicants who are granted a waiver will still be required to attend an English Language Interview during the audition period (see below).
  4. The Juilliard School’s CEEB code is 002340.

  6. Current and Former Juilliard College Students do not need to submit another TOEFL.

English Language Interview: In addition, you are required to complete an interview with the Office of International Advisement (Room 245) during the audition period, regardless of whether a TOEFL waiver is granted. This interview is an essential component for the Admissions Committee in making admissions decisions. It is important to note that this interview does not replace a TOEFL score, nor can a member of the International Advisement staff waive the English Language Proficiency requirement.

Essay

All applicants are required to submit an essay as a component of the online application. Juilliard’s Admissions Committee uses your essay to learn more about you as an individual, and gain a sense of who you are beyond your application, transcript and audition.  Essays should be 1 - 2 pages, double-spaced, in a 12 point font.

Jazz Studies and Opera Studies applicants: choose one of the following essay topics:

  • Describe the most challenging obstacle you have had to overcome; discuss its impact, and tell us what you have learned from the experience.
  • Dr. Joseph Polisi, Juilliard’s president, has stated: “. . . [talented young people are] responsible for more than getting the notes right or the words right or the steps right. They have to be missionaries for the arts." Write about how, as an artist, you intend to advocate for the relevancy of the arts in the twenty-first century.
  • Using one of these words as the title of your essay, write about what the word means to you: A. Commitment; B. Education; or C. Discipline.

Music Performance applicants: Please state your specific artistic and educational objectives for this period of study. Give some thought to the verifiability of these professional goals and how you would work in a non-structured educational environment to achieve them. It is important to note that this statement is a critically important aspect of the admission review process.

Your essay should be submitted through the online application. Please do not also submit a hard copy of your essay via post.

Dossier (Music Performance applicants only)

Applicants to the Artist Diploma in Music Performance must submit a dossier containing documentation of professional accomplishments in performance. This should include, but is not limited to: a bio, a representative repertoire list from the past two years, press clippings/reviews, list of recordings (if any), Web site address (if available).

As part of the dossier, applicants are required to write three short essays* (no more than a page each, double-spaced, 12 point font) on the following topics:

  1. Discuss a particularly interesting artistic project that you have been involved with in the past 5 years;
  2. Briefly describe how you would go about planning a recital program; and
  3. Tell the Artist Diploma in Music Performance Committee where you see yourself five years from now.
*These short essays are in addition to the required Artist Diploma essay.

Letters of Recommendation

Jazz Studies applicants are not required to submit letters of recommendation, but may do so if they desire.

Music Performance and Opera Studies* applicants must submit two letters of recommendation. These should address the applicant’s academic and performance potential for the A.D program.

*Currently enrolled Voice majors are not required to submit letters of recommendation.

Mailing Instructions

  • Supplemental materials should be sent using mailing systems that can be tracked (i.e. FedEx, UPS, or registered mail) so that you can confirm they were received by Juilliard by the appropriate deadline.
  • The mailing address should contain your major and specify the enclosed material (please see example below). However, if mailing a check, please do not put any references to it on the envelope (you may simply write "Application Materials").
  • Please send required materials well in advance of the deadline(s) so that they are RECEIVED BY the appropriate date(s).
  • Failure to follow the recommended mailing format and instructions may result in your application being considered late.

Audition

  • Majors that are not pre-screened are guaranteed an audition. Pre-screened majors are reviewed for audition invitations.
  • All applicants invited to audition must do so live in New York; The Juilliard School does not accept video auditions, under any circumstances.
  • It is recommended that applicants avoid scheduling conflicts by planning to be available for the entire audition period.

Standardized Tests

Juilliard does not require the GRE. However, applicants who are taking the tests are welcome to send results to the Admissions Office. The Juilliard School’s CEEB code is 2340.

Currently Enrolled Juilliard College Students

  1. Currently enrolled Juilliard students seeking to enter a new program of study must apply formally by the appropriate application deadline and must audition during published audition dates. Auditions for the Artist Diploma will not serve as graduation juries.
  2. Current students are not required to submit pre-screening materials unless applying to a different major (if applicable).
  3. The application fee of $60 (or $110 for Music Performance applicants applying to both the A.D. and the D.M.A.) will be waived for all current students who submit their applications on or before the deadline.
  4. Current students who missed the appropriate application deadline must make an appointment with the Associate Dean for Admissions to request approval of a late application. If approved, the full fee of $60 (or $110) will be charged.
  5. Jazz Studies and Opera Studies applicants: please note the specific essay requirement for current students in the Application for Admission. Music Performance applicants must submit an essay with the online application, as well as the three Artist Diploma short essays.
  6. Music Performance applicants are required to submit two letters of recommendation. Recommendations are not required for current Voice students applying to the Artist Diploma in Opera Studies, or current Jazz Studies students applying to the Artist Diploma in Jazz Studies.
  7. Current students do not need to request Juilliard transcripts be sent to Admissions.
  8. Current students do not need to submit another TOEFL.
  9. The Admissions Office reserves the right to review a student’s enrollment record to assist with admissions decisions.

    Formerly Enrolled Juilliard Students

    1. Former college students who have not been in attendance during the previous academic year and who plan to apply for readmission must submit an application and fee to the Office of Admissions by the appropriate deadline.
    2. All former students applying for readmission are required to submit pre-screening materials (if applicable) and take the regular entrance auditions.
    3. Jazz Studies and Opera Studies applicants: please note the specific essay requirement for formerly enrolled students in the Application for Admission. 
      Music Performance applicants must submit an essay with the online application, as well as the three Artist Diploma short essays.
    4. Former college students are required to submit the appropriate letters of recommendation.
    5. Former college students do not need to request Juilliard transcripts be sent to Admissions, however, they should provide transcripts for any other institutions attended after their tenure at Juilliard.
    6. Former college students do not need to submit another TOEFL.
    7. The Admissions Office reserves the right to review a student’s enrollment record to assist with admissions decisions.
    8. The Juilliard School statute of limitations policy limits the amount of time allowed to elapse between a student’s original enrollment in a program of study and completion of that program.

      Applicants With Disabilities

      The Juilliard School seeks to facilitate the full participation of disabled applicants in the audition process. The School makes reasonable accommodations or adjustments for qualified individuals with known disabilities in compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 (A.D.A.). Juilliard will not make pre-admissions inquiries as to whether or not a student has a disability; however, applicants with documented disabilities who require reasonable accommodations in order to participate in the audition process must notify the Office of Academic Support Services (OASS) in writing by December 15, 2011 (November 15 for Opera Studies applicants) to the address below. Applicants will be required to submit documentation of their disability to OASS, and to complete an Applicant Release of Disability Related Information Form and an Audition Accommodation Request Form. All information will be kept strictly confidential.
