Transfer Applicants

  1. Transfer applicants must submit official transcripts for all full-time college level study. Applicants who have attended less than two complete, full-time semesters of college must also submit official high school transcripts.
  2. The minimum required residency for transfer applicants is two years, or three years for majors in Voice.
  3. Advanced standing for music applicants is based entirely on faculty evaluations of the student’s capabilities and by the placement exams that are administered after acceptance.
  4. Credits in liberal arts courses taken at accredited conservatories, colleges, or universities may be transferred after the registrar has assessed the official transcripts from those institutions. Credits in these subjects will be evaluated in the light of the liberal arts requirements in the Bachelor of Music degree program at Juilliard. Credit will not be allowed for courses in which the applicant has received a grade lower than C or its equivalent. Transfer applicants are required to take a minimum of 12 liberal arts credits in residence at Juilliard.

Standardized Tests

Juilliard does not require the SAT I, SAT II, or ACT tests. However, applicants for whom English is not the native language may submit SAT I scores in lieu of the TOEFL to demonstrate English Language Proficiency (see here for further instructions). The Juilliard School’s CEEB code is 2340.

Mailing Instructions

  • Supplemental materials should be sent using mailing systems that can be tracked (i.e. FedEx, UPS, or registered mail) so that you can confirm they were received by Juilliard by the appropriate deadline.
  • The mailing address should contain your major and specify the enclosed material (please see example below). However, if mailing a check, please do not put any references to it on the envelope (you may simply write "Application Materials").
  • Please send required materials well in advance of the deadline(s) so that they are RECEIVED BY the appropriate date(s).
  • Failure to follow the recommended mailing format and instructions may result in your application being considered late.

Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange (B-C-J)

A limited number of current or prospective Barnard and Columbia students may have the opportunity to pursue private music lessons at Juilliard. Successful applicants to the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange are full-time registered students at Barnard or Columbia, have weekly lessons with a member of the Juilliard faculty, and take annual juries, which determine eligibility to continue in the program. It is important to note that the Exchange does not include participation in Juilliard ensembles or classes.

Participants in the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange must pay, in addition to Barnard or Columbia tuition, $5,060/year (2011 - 2012; subject to change) for the cost of lessons at Juilliard. Need-based financial aid is awarded to Barnard and Columbia students; please refer to each college’s financial aid policies for specific information. The additional tuition expenses for Exchange participants will be factored into the awarding of each applicant's need-based financial aid eligibility.

Applicants to this program must submit a Juilliard Application for Admission, including pre-screening materials if required, by the published deadline. Admission to the Exchange is highly selective, with only 8–10 students from all classical and jazz music majors admitted each year. The application fee for Exchange applicants is $35.

Applicants to both the Exchange AND Bachelor of Music at Juilliard: Barnard and Columbia applicants who apply to the Exchange may also choose to apply to The Juilliard School for the Bachelor of Music. On the application, please select both the Bachelor of Music as well as Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange (on the print application, check both boxes; on the online application, select “Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange AND Bachelor of Music”). It is possible, because of the selectivity described above, that applicants to both Juilliard and the Exchange may be admitted to only Juilliard’s Bachelor of Music program and not be admitted to the Exchange, regardless of admission status at Barnard or Columbia.

First-time college students who are applying Early Decision to Barnard or Columbia must withdraw their Bachelor of Music application if admitted Early Decision, but may continue with their application to the Exchange. The application fee for applicants to both The Juilliard School and the Exchange is $110.

Applicants who have been admitted to and participate in the Exchange while attending Barnard or Columbia do not receive a double (or dual) undergraduate degree. However, they do have the opportunity of auditioning for the Juilliard Master of Music degree program during their junior year at Barnard or Columbia. Exchange students must apply for the Master of Music by the December 1 deadline, and pay the $110 application fee. The pre-screening (if applicable) is waived. The applicant should complete most liberal arts requirements at Barnard or Columbia within three years, while taking major lessons at Juilliard. In the spring of the junior year, the applicant will audition at Juilliard for entrance to the Master of Music program. If admitted, the student will normally spend two subsequent years (three for Voice majors) primarily at Juilliard, while finishing any remaining undergraduate requirements at Barnard or Columbia. Successful completion of all requirements for both institutions will lead to a Bachelor’s from Barnard or Columbia and a Master of Music from Juilliard. If Barnard/Columbia students wish to pursue this option, they should seek counseling at both Juilliard and their home institution on how to make this option work for them.

The B-C-J exchange program also allows Juilliard students in good academic standing the opportunity to enroll in one course per semester at Barnard or Columbia (excluding students in drama). Undergraduate students may be eligible to enroll in liberal arts electives at Barnard or Columbia to satisfy the third- and fourth-year requirement. Graduate students may be eligible to enroll in a course for enrichment purposes, however, the courses do not satisfy graduate requirements. Applications are available in the Office of the Registrar and must be filed each semester. New students must complete at least one semester at Juilliard to be eligible to apply.

Please note: Applicants interested in both the B-C-J and the B.M. programs at Juilliard choose the program “Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange AND Bachelor of Music” in the Application for Admission.

Currently Enrolled Juilliard College Students 

  1. Currently enrolled Juilliard students seeking to change majors must apply formally by the appropriate application deadline, submit pre-screening materials (if applicable), and must audition during published audition dates.
  2. Currently enrolled Juilliard students seeking to enter a new program of study (for example, undergraduates applying to graduate programs) must apply formally by the appropriate application deadline and must audition during published audition dates. Pre-screening materials are not required unless applying to a different major (for example, an undergraduate pianist applying for the Master's in composition or collaborative piano would have to submit pre-screening materials).
  3. The application fee of $110 will be waived for all current students who submit their applications on or before the deadline.
  4. Current students who missed the appropriate application deadline must make an appointment with the Associate Dean for Admissions to request approval of a late application. If approved, the full fee of $110 will be charged.
  5. Please note the specific essay requirement for current students in the Application for Admission.
  6. Current students do not need to request Juilliard transcripts be sent to Admissions.
  7. Current students do not need to submit another TOEFL.

  1. Pre-screening materials are waived for all majors, with the exception of Composition. Composition applicants must submit all required pre-screening materials.

Formerly Enrolled Juilliard Students

  1. Former college students who have not been in attendance during the previous academic year and who plan to apply for readmission must submit an application and fee to the Office of Admissions by the appropriate deadline.
  2. All former students applying for readmission are required to submit pre-screening materials (if applicable) and take the regular entrance auditions.
  3. Please note the specific essay requirement for formerly enrolled students in the Application for Admission.
  4. Former college students do not need to request Juilliard transcripts be sent to Admissions, however, they should provide transcripts for any other institutions attended after their tenure at Juilliard.
  5. Former college students do not need to submit another TOEFL.
  6. The Admissions Office reserves the right to review a student’s enrollment record to assist with admissions decisions.
  7. The Juilliard School statute of limitations policy limits the amount of time allowed to elapse between a student’s original enrollment in a program of study and completion of that program.

Applicants With Disabilities

The Juilliard School seeks to facilitate the full participation of disabled applicants in the audition process. The School makes reasonable accommodations or adjustments for qualified individuals with known disabilities in compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 (A.D.A.). Juilliard will not make pre-admissions inquiries as to whether or not a student has a disability; however, applicants with documented disabilities who require reasonable accommodations in order to participate in the audition process must notify the Office of Academic Support Services (OASS) in writing by December 15, 2011 to the address below. Applicants will be required to submit documentation of their disability to OASS, and to complete an Applicant Release of Disability Related Information Form and an Audition Accommodation Request Form. All information will be kept strictly confidential.
