A two-semester course
Description:

In this course, students learn the elements of music and prepare the foundation for materials discussed in later L&M classes. These include notation, symbols, names of notes through fixed-do solfège, clefs, key signatures, major and all three minor scales, modal scales, intervals, triads, and seventh chords, as well as an introduction to four-part writing, analysis, and modulation. Students are introduced to the reading of simple scores and apply basic skills learned in class through discussion and analysis. This class requires extensive outside preparation in the completion of weekly assignments in order for students to master the skills necessary to continue in the L&M sequence. Placement interview required. Not subject to N.Y. Philharmonic discount.
