How do we learn to become our own best ears, to sing our ”inner voice out” at the keyboard, and to “bring the listener in” on what we intend to communicate? As pianists our goal is to project the spirit of each piece we choose to perform. After the performance is over, it is vital to reflect on what was actually communicated. In this class, students develop listening and playing skills in a wide range of musical styles through analysis and evaluation of in-class performances and frequent use of in-class recording. Students use these recordings to reflect on their playing and compare with recordings of past and present masters. Ultimately, students improve their listening skills and develop tools of self-evaluation to create performance quality that captures their intentions and those of the composer. Each semester concludes with a final class performance celebrating the works studied. Audition required. Not subject to N.Y. Philharmonic discount.
