Piano concerto repertoire is full of beauty and brilliance, and showcases the pianist as the “protagonist” in dramatic works. In a master-class setting, soloists study their favorite concerto with a second piano orchestral accompaniment each week. Students may select from the extraordinary piano concertos of Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Shostakovich, Gershwin, as well as living composers. We also highlight the bicentennials of Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Schumann by including their concerto repertoire. Students learn how to address the challenges of performing with an orchestra — including balance, tone projection, color, and phrasing — with technical support. Characteristic cadenzas as well as various editions and effective rehearsal technique are also considered. At the end of each semester, students perform an in-class concert of the works studied. No previous concerto experience required.
