Dances and sonatas have been embraced across the centuries by both performers and audiences, as these fascinating forms are ever telling stories. Through listening, discussion, and performance, we explore the distinct characteristics of these genres and their influence on performance practices. We consider the nuances of rhythm, color, and harmony of various dance forms — including the allemande, waltzes, mazurkas, and tangos — and learn more about the formal structure and historic evolution of the sonata. Students alternate their weekly “study through performance” between a dance movement (such as a Bach French suite, Chopin or Ravel waltz, or Piazzolla tango) and a sonata (by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Liszt, Scriabin, Barber, and others); each semester concludes with a final class performance celebrating the works studied. Audition required. Not subject to N.Y. Philharmonic discount.
