Perhaps the greatest love affair of all composers is with the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. Franz Schubert imitated Beethoven in his large-form compositions, and was one of the carriers of his coffin in 1827 (not knowing that he himself would die a year later). These two composers share not only the same period of musical history, but a compositional range that includes symphonies and chamber music in addition to works for piano. Beethoven’s piano pieces are challenging to most pianists, with their technical intricacies and varied musical ideas. Schubert’s music reflects his adoration for the voice, and song-like writing is found throughout his instrumental music, including his piano compositions. In this class, students explore the piano literature of Beethoven and Schubert, performing comparable movements of works by each composer. Audition required. Not subject to N.Y. Philharmonic discount.
