A two-semester course
Description:
This course is a nuts-and-bolts practicum on how the instruments of the orchestra function, both individually and in an ensemble. Students are introduced to the characteristics of each orchestral instrument with written exercises, supporting musical examples taken from significant orchestral works, and demonstrations by representative instrumentalists. Each semester culminates in a reading session of student orchestration projects by Juilliard musicians from the College Division. The fall semester focuses on instruments of the string family, while the spring semester focuses on woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Prerequisite: A proficiency in transposition. Not subject to N.Y. Philharmonic discount. Placement Interview required; please call the Evening Division Office to schedule an appointment.
