Biographical Information:
Violinist-composer who performs diverse programs, including her own works for interactive computer systems and violin. Developed "Subharmonics" bowing technique, extending range of the violin by one octave below open G without changing the tuning. Numerous international concerts include International Bartok Festival, ISCM World Music Days. Performed concertos of Ligeti, Adams, Hillborg, and Saariaho with Tokyo Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, and others. Premiered Jean-Claude Risset's Violin Concerto with Tokyo Symphony (2007), using her own cadenza. Recordings: Polytopia, for solo violin and electronics (Bridge Records); free improvisation with Robert Dick, Jim O'Rourke, Henry Kaiser, and Elliott Sharp. Awards: Kenzo Nakajima Music Prize (Japan) for creative activities, ISCM Recital Awards. Articles for MIT Press, Cambridge U. Press, Strings, and Journal of Acoustical Society of America. Artist-in-residence: Banff Center for the Arts, Headland Center for the Arts, Other Minds Festival, Harvestworks. Grants/commissions: Jerome Foundation, Meet the Composer, Arts International, Japan Foundation, N.Y. Foundation for the Arts, and N.Y.S. Council on the Arts.
