Permanent conductor designate, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra; laureate music director, Oregon Symphony; principal artistic advisor, Phoenix Symphony. Previously music director of L'Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, Sweden's Malmö Symphony, L'Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, and the Oregon Symphony. Guest conducted with virtually every major orchestra in North America, and numerous orchestras in Europe and Asia. Fifty-album discography, including 15 with the Oregon Symphony. Author of two published books of poetry. Recipient of 13 honorary doctorates, including one from The Juilliard School (1993).
