Description:
Modernity is often characterized by the conflict between religious and scientific authorities, institutions, and texts. Less understood is the role of literature as a mediator between the combatants. In this course, we will examine conflicts over the existence of God, the evolution of species, the nature of democracy, and the function of education as they have been staged as a war between two contending cultures. Does literature offer a "third culture" that creates a space for both science and religion in the same society?
