Internships
Internships provide valuable opportunities to observe, learn, and actively participate in professional work environments. Internships can be paid or unpaid and may last anywhere from several weeks to a full semester. Unlike other institutions of higher education, Juilliard does not provide academic credit for internship service. However, current students and recent alumni are encouraged to take advantage of internships in order to learn new skills, develop self-awareness, and make professional contacts.
Here are some suggestions to help you get the most out of an internship:
How to start
Most internship applications require a résumé and cover letter; an interview will also likely be part of process. If don’t have a current résumé and cover letter, the Office of Career Services is here to help you to put your material together. You may also set up an appointment for a test interview. Please stop by Room 476 or call ext. 7315 for additional information.
Responsibilities
Like any other job, internships require professionalism. You will be expected to be punctual, have a positive and mature attitude toward work, and respect your co-workers.
Networking
Internships offer opportunities to network. Interns often work closely with producers, managers, art presenters, casting directors, choreographers, and other professionals in the arts industry. The network you establish with these professionals will be an important tool for building your career.
Learn New Skills
Most internships help you to develop a set of new skills. Whether you find an internship in theater, management, or administration, you will learn various skills such as leadership, written and verbal communication, and professional etiquette.
Explore an Interest
Internships enable you to explore a field of interest. The new skills and knowledge you gain from internships will expand your perspective, helping you to develop ideas, and define goals.
Volunteer
Historically, Juilliard students and alumni have been among the first to volunteer of their time and talents to communities in need. On September 11, 2001, Juilliard artists along with many others rushed to hospitals and fire stations to provide music and offered a helping hand. Since then, volunteer activities have increased dramatically throughout the city, the country, and abroad.
Through volunteering, students and alumni gain awareness of themselves and the invaluable role that they can play in their society. Whether they work in a soup kitchen or organize a free concert for an orphanage, volunteer opportunities provide new contacts, new skills, and a chance to become an integral part of a community. These volunteer experiences will inspire Juilliard artists to become strong advocates for the role that the arts play in society.
