Teaching Programs/Fellowships
Combining Literacy Instruction Through Musical Beginnings (CLIMB)
The students in CLIMB are siblings of students in the Music Advancement Program. CLIMB provides weekly two-hour tutoring/teaching sessions at Juilliard to children ages 4 to 10 each Saturday that MAP is in session. Students are grouped by age into three groups: 4-5, 6-7, and 8-10. Teachers stress phonics and reading comprehension, and provide a fun introduction to classical music using music vocabulary and hands-on activities.
Concert Fellowship Program
The Concert Fellowship Program offers the opportunity for New York City school students in the fourth grade, and their teachers, to interact with Juilliard Concert Fellows during 14 classroom sessions throughout the year, plus seven chamber music concerts per year at Juilliard (called the Young People’s Concert Series). The participants are prepared at their own school before each concert by the Fellows, who return for follow-up sessions after the Juilliard performance.
Goldman Fellowship Program
The Goldman Fellowship Program engages Juilliard music, dance, and drama students in partnerships with New York City public schools and community organizations. Goldman Fellows participate in a specified number of customized outreach activities each semester, specific to the needs of each partnering organization, to provide economically disadvantaged children with exposure to the arts. Current partnering organizations include Harlem School of the Arts, George Jackson Academy, Hunts Point Alliance for Children, and Harlem Children’s Zone.
The Goldman Fellowship Program is made possible by generous funding from Goldman Sachs.
Instrumental Music Program (IMP)
The Instrumental Music Program offers instrumental group lessons to New York City school students in fourth and fifth grades. During this unique school-year experience, Juilliard students teach weekly lessons on brass, woodwinds, and string instruments in a group setting at the partner school. The IMP students perform in two concerts for their peers, one in December and one toward the end of the school year.
The Instrumental Music Program receives generous funding from Mr. and Mrs. Lester S. Morse Jr.
Morse Fellowship Program
The Morse Fellowship Program brings the performing arts to New York City school students and their classroom teachers in annual artist residencies. Juilliard’s Morse Fellows prepare their own curriculum and teach two classes per week throughout the academic year in area schools. This pioneer program brings needed music instruction to schools that are underserved in the arts, while providing Juilliard students the opportunity to mature as teaching artists.
The Morse Fellowship Program receives generous funding from Mr. and Mrs. Lester S. Morse Jr.
Music Advancement Program (MAP) Fellowship
The Music Advancement Program Fellowship offers Juilliard students the opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience with Juilliard’s nationally recognized Saturday instrument instruction program. MAP fellows teach weekly lessons, serving not just as instructors to their students, but as mentors. MAP fellows also communicate with parents, assist MAP staff, and collaborate with other MAP faculty.
