INTRO CLASSES

Introduction to Music Production
Greg Kalember or Milica Paranosic

An introduction to the basic skills needed for composing and producing music in a studio environment. Topics of study include sequencing, sampling, sound editing and basic signal processing.  Emphasis will be given to Logic Pro although other commonly used music production software will be introduced.  Class work will include weekly composition and listening assignments. A solid understanding of Mac OS X or higher is required.

Introduction to Interactive Music Technology
Mari Kimura

This course will introduce the basics of interactive music technology.  Emphasis will be given to MaxMSP however, other software, such as Ableton LIVE, will also be covered.  Weekly assignments and long-term projects are designed to serve students individual creative interests and professional needs.  A solid understanding of Mac OS X or higher is required.

Composing with Technology
Edward Bilous

This course will provide composers with the basic tools and techniques needed to create music in a contemporary production environment. Topics of study will include basic acoustics and sound production, sequencing and recording, arranging for electronic instruments, sound editing, signal processing, and mixing. Critically acclaimed recordings of music of various styles and genres will serve as focal points of study. Classwork will include composition assignments, critical listening, and discussions and a long-term creative project. A basic understanding of Mac OS X is required.

ADVANCED CLASSES

Music Production
Edward Bilous/William Fastenow

A survey of music production techniques used by composers, arrangers, and producers in the recording industry. Topics of study include creating rhythm tracks, arranging for electronic instruments and basic mixing skills. Class work includes weekly composition assignments and a long-term creative project. Critically acclaimed recordings of music of various styles and genres will serve as focal points of study. A solid understanding of Logic Pro is required. 

Scoring to Picture
Edward Bilous/William Fastenow

For students interested in learning the fundamental skills needed to compose and produce music for film, television and other narrative media.  Topics include, spotting a picture, creating a composition that supports a visual narrative and basic production techniques. Critically acclaimed scores of various styles and genres will serve as focal points of study. Coursework will include weekly composition assignments in which students will be required to create original music to excerpts from feature films, documentaries and other filmed media.  A solid understanding of Logic Pro is required.

Advanced Interactive Music Technology
Mari Kimura

For advanced students interested in using interactive performance technology. Class work will include weekly and long-term projects that feature live interaction between computers using MaxMSP and electronic or acoustic instruments. A solid understanding of MaxMSP is required. Selected projects will be eligible for performance on Beyond the Machine, A Festival of Interdisciplinary and Multimedia Art at Juilliard.

Independent Study

​For advanced students interested in developing independent projects using new technology. Advanced knowledge of related software is required. Selected projects will be eligible for performance on Beyond the Machine, A Festival of Interdisciplinary and Multimedia Art at Juilliard.
