Performance Opportunities
Performance is at the heart of study at Juilliard. Every student has the opportunity to sing in at least one fully-staged opera each year. Recent operas include Mozart's The Magic Flute, Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges, Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Smetana's The Bartered Bride, Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, and the world premiere of Lowell Liebermann's Miss Lonelyhearts, commissioned as part of Juilliard's centennial celebration. Opera Studies classes emphasize scene and aria study, character development, acting, and ensemble work, and culminate with public showings. A regular series of recitals pairs singers with student collaborative pianists or with senior faculty coaches for the opportunity to explore the rich song repertoire. In addition, Juilliard is an important presence in the musical life of New York City, providing opportunities that do not exist at any other music conservatory. In recent seasons, Vocal Arts students have sung with the Juilliard Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall, in recital at Alice Tully Hall, with the New York Philharmonic, the New York Festival of Song, and in collaborations with Juilliard's Dance Division.
Juilliard regularly invites esteemed guest artists, including some of the world's most notable singers, directors, and conductors to share their knowledge in master classes. Recent guests have included Leontyne Price, Renata Scotto, Thomas Hampson, Sir David Atherton, Stephen Wadsworth, Regina Resnik, Victoria Clark, and José Van Dam.
Opera Studies classes are an important part of the Vocal Arts curriculum at Juilliard. In addition to fulfilling academic requirements necessary to complete each degree program, singers at Juilliard receive special training that addresses the unique demands of opera performance. Established in 1997, the Alice Tully Vocal Arts Debut recital provides outstanding Juilliard singers with the opportunity to perform a solo recital in Alice Tully Hall. This unique performance opportunity for advanced Juilliard singers and recent graduates displays Alice Tully's devotion to the vocal arts and young performing artists. The Vocal Arts faculty and administration nominate singers to audition in the spring for a panel of select guest artists. The winner makes his or her recital debut at Alice Tully Hall the following fall. Auditions and the recital are administered through the School's Office of Special Events.
Liederabends are art song recitals offered through the collaborative piano department in which collaborative piano and voice students have the opportunity to work together. Students interested in participating should talk to the director of vocal performance activities. Students must be in good academic standing in order to participate. The Vocal Arts Department assists participants in their preparation for the recital. Liederabends are held in Paul Recital Hall and are free and open to the public. (Check the schedule of Liederabends performances on our Calendar of Events.)
Master classes, led by prominent guest artists, are held throughout the school year. Some are open to the public, but most are not. Students who are nominated to participate in master classes must be in good academic standing at the School and are selected either by invitation or by audition.
Songbooks is an art-song recital series in which Vocal Arts students and faculty coaches collaborate. Participants are selected by the director of vocal performance activities and the voice and coaching faculty to perform in Songbooks. Students must be in good academic standing in order to participate. The Department of Vocal Arts assigns participants to coachings with their respective coach in preparation for the recital. Songbooks, which are free and open to the public, take place in Morse Hall unless otherwise posted.
The annual Vocal Arts Honors Recital takes place in Alice Tully Hall, usually in the spring. It gives students who have demonstrated exceptional skill as recitalists the opportunity to perform in Lincoln Center's premier recital venue. Nominations are made by the voice faculty. A panel of guest artists is invited to adjudicate auditions and make the final selections.
