First prize, Rachmaninoff Piano Competition, 1948. Soloist with most major American orchestras. Artistic director, U. of Maryland International Piano Festival and William Kapell Competition, 1988-92. Chamber music partner of many artists, including Jascha Heifetz, Guarneri and Juilliard Quartets. Currently artistic director, Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival. Recordings: Stravinsky Concerto and Capriccio with New York Phiharmonic, Bernstein conducting; 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas; other works with Oscar Shumsky and Aaron Rosand. Recently performed and currently recording the complete Schubert sonata cycle. Music director and principal guest conductor, Joffrey Ballet Company, 1966-79; music director, Long Island Symphony, 1963-79. Conducted operas in the United States and abroad, including New York City Opera. Faculty, Manhattan School of Music, 1972-87; New England Conservatory, 1984-86; Marymount College, 1963-72; Curtis Institute of Music, since 1969.
