Juilliard Second Century Fund

The Juilliard Second Century Fund will raise $300 million to enable The Juilliard School to sustain its leadership position in performing arts education well into the School’s next century. Expanded and renamed on the occasion of Juilliard’s 100th anniversary, the fund supports six key components that will help Juilliard continue to recruit the world’s best young artists and faculty, offer educational programs that uphold the quality of a Juilliard education, and increase the size and functionality of Juilliard's physical plant.

Educational Initiatives
Funds raised for educational initiatives support four programs. The Larkin Fund for Humanities addresses the non-performance aspects of the Juilliard education through such innovations as a Mentoring program, a writing and speaking center, and a Visiting Scholars program. The Creative Process endowment provides ongoing support for the creation of new work in dance, drama, and music. An endowment for jazz studies provides a permanent financial foundation for the operations of Juilliard’s jazz program, founded in 2001. An endowment for educational outreach assures the continuation of vital programs that reach school-age children whose public schools lack the resources to provide adequate exposure to the performing arts.

Faculty Compensation
Juilliard is committed to achieving and maintaining levels of compensation for all faculty at amounts that reflect local and national norms. More appropriate compensation will provide greater employment security to classroom and studio faculty, who often teach at other institutions, and will enable Juilliard to extend its tradition of attracting the most distinguished teachers from around the world to the School as permanent and visiting members of the faculty.

Physical Plant

Nearly 40 years old, Juilliard’s building requires expansion and renovation to meet the space needs stemming from the natural growth of existing programs. An extension of the building toward Broadway will increase space by approximately 40,000 square feet of usable space, and extensive renovations to existing areas will allow for more efficient use of space. Key aspects of the expansion are a technologically advanced theater, an acoustically perfect orchestral rehearsal studio, large studios for dance and jazz instruction, a student lounge, and a dramatic use of glass curtain walls along 65th Street and Broadway that symbolically open up Juilliard’s building to the public.

Scholarship Assistance
Juilliard is increasing its financial resources in order to meet a greater portion of students’ needs for tuition and living expenses. Greater and more scholarships will guarantee that the most talented and deserving applicants will be able to enjoy the benefits of a Juilliard education without undue financial burdens and will allow Juilliard to continue to attract the very best candidates for admission.

Special Purpose

Funds designated for special initiatives that fall outside the components above are designated as special purpose gifts. Endowed prizes, endowments for performance activities, and instrument maintenance programs are examples of the kinds of initiatives supported by this component.

Unrestricted Purposes
Endowment gifts without restrictions will allow Juilliard the flexibility to direct investment income to areas of greatest need on a year-to-year basis.
