Few composers have enjoyed the creative longevity that has marked Elliott Carter's career. The New York City-born Carter, who turns 99 on December 11, 2007, has written a vast array of music, and his works have passed through many important stages (as would be expected from someone who has been composing for as long as Carter). This year's Focus! festival will be celebrating Carter on the eve of his 100th birthday. These photos, showing the composer through a span of six decades, are from the Juilliard Archives.
