The Latest on Faculty, Staff, and Students



In February, chamber music faculty member Audrey Axinn (MM ’90, DMA ’98, accompanying) was appointed to the collaborative piano faculty at Mannes College the New School for Music. She will also be continuing as assistant dean and teaching fortepiano at Mannes.

Three members of the Juilliard community were nominated for Helen Hayes Awards in the outstanding director, resident play category. They were faculty member Christopher Bayes, for The Servant of Two Masters at the Shakespeare Theater Company; Michael Kahn, director emeritus of the Drama Division, for The Government Inspector, also at the Shakespeare Theater Company; and Kirsten Kelly (Directing ’03), for Big Love at the Hub Theater.

Triptych, by ear training faculty member Kyle Blaha (MM ’06, DMA ’11, composition), was premiered by the American Composers Orchestra in January.

In March, Monica Huggett, artist in residence and artistic advisor of the Historical Performance program, performed Vivaldi’s Il Favorito and the East Coast premiere of Hollis Taylor’s Groove Theory, a concerto written for Huggett, with New York Baroque Incorporated. The performance took place at the Dimenna Center in New York.

Pre-College violin faculty assistant Khullip Jeung is the chairperson for the 2013 International Virtuoso Competition, which will be held in Englewood, N.J., on May 5. Jeung and his wife, Jisun Kang (MM ’04, violin), have started a summer music program, 4Strings Music Festival, which will take place in August in Ellenville, N.Y. Faculty members include Amy Kim (MM ’91, cello), Liana Laura Mount (MM ’85, DMA ’91, viola), and Wei-Yang Andy Lin (BM ’06, MM ’08, viola). 

In August, Evening Division piano faculty member Julie Jordan (MM ’83, piano) will be teaching at the Mountain View International Festival of Song and Chamber Music in Calgary, Alberta, offering a piano workshop on concertos and chamber and solo repertoire.

Michael Musgrave’s (Graduate Studies) editions of the two Brahms orchestral Serenades, Op. 11 and Op. 16, for the Johannes Brahms Gesamtausgabe were issued in March (Munich: Henle Verlag) in study score versions with English translation of the notes.

Pre-College faculty member Matthew Odell (DMA ’10, collaborative piano) recently presented solo recitals, master classes, and workshops at Patrick Henry College in Purcellville, Va., and Monteverdi Music School in Montpelier, Vt. In December he continued his recital series of the complete solo piano music of Messiaen with a performance of the composer’s early works at An die Musik in Baltimore. Also at An die Musik, he performed a recital of the music of former Juilliard faculty member Elliott Carter in February. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Debussy, Odell organized and performed a recital series called Forgotten Melodies: The Songs of Claude Debussy at Lincoln Center in November and December. 

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, written by Christopher Durang, co-director of the Juilliard Playwrights program, moved to Broadway’s Golden Theater in March and will be there through June 30. Shalita Grant (Group 39) is featured in the production.

Dance faculty member David Parker has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. 

In July, Pre-College faculty member Tali Roth (MM ’93, guitar) will teach a two-week guitar course at the Narnia Arts Academy as part of the Narnia Festival and International Summer Training Program in Narni, Italy. In March, Roth performed in Opera Hispánica’s production of Piazzolla’s tango-opera, Maria de Buenos Aires, at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge. 


The Call, a new play by Tanya Barfield (Artist Diploma ’02, playwrights), the literary manager and administrator of the Playwrights program, is at Playwrights Horizons through May 19.

In July, Paulette Penzvalto, the Special Projects and Development intern, will be performing in the New American Opera Company’s performance of Styria, an opera by composer/librettist duo Sarah Hutchings and Amanda Consul. 


In March, guitar student Bokyung Byun recorded for the radio show From the Top. She performed Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Francisco Tárrega and the show was broadcast nationally in April. Byun, along with guitar student Tengyue Zhang were winners of the 2012 Guitar Foundation of America regional competition, held in New York. 

Last month, the Whiskey Collection, comprised of master’s bassist Alex Jenkins, Corey Gerstenfeld (Pre-College ’08; BM ’12, bass), Kyle Brightwell (BM ’10, percussion), Cameron Scoggins (Group 40), and Russell Durham (’08, violin) released their debut full-length album, Letters From an Old Trunk. The group performed an album release show at New York City’s Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2. 

In March, master’s harpist Gwenllian Llyr performed at the ceremony to unveil Richard Burton’s star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. 

Souvenirs d’Europe by doctoral candidate Jared Miller was the required work in the final round of the Knigge Piano Competition, held in March at the University of British Columbia. Each of the eight finalists performed the solo piano work. First-year master’s pianist Nan Gan took third prize in the competition.

In February, Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard Exchange student Conrad Tao (Pre-College ’11) performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 with the Hong Kong Symphony under the direction of Jaap van Zweden (’79, violin).
