A Fruitful Collaboration

Alumnae Barbara Bogatin (left) and Dalit Warshaw at a concert of chamber music written by Warshaw for theremin and other instruments.

Barbara Bogatin (BM ’74, MM ’75, cello) was so intrigued by an article in the March 2011 Juilliard Journal, about the legendary theremin performer Clara Rockmore, that she contacted the author, Dalit Warshaw (MM ’97, DMA ’03, composition), and proposed that they collaborate on chamber music. This fall, that plan came to fruition when members of the San Francisco Symphony performed music by Warshaw at Davies Symphony Hall. Among the works were Warshaw’s Transformations for String Quartet and Theremin and Nizk’Orah for Cello, Piano, and Theremin, and Martin’s Fantasia for String Quartet, Piano, Oboe, and Theremin. In addition to Warshaw and Bogtatin, performers included Robin Sutherland (’70, piano) and Nadya Tichman (Pre-College ’76).
