In February, the Juilliard Opera Theater presented Mozart's fantastical Magic Flute. While the handsome prince, amorous bird catchers, and infamous queen played their usual roles in the story, the production was far from traditional. A collaboration of director Robin Guarino, conductor Gary Thor Wedow, and J.O.T. codirector Reed Woodhouse, this Magic Flute's costumes, setting, and libretto were updated to help a modern audience appreciate the richness of Mozart's original masterpiece. Also in February, the Juilliard Orchestra welcomed its alumni home with a concert and special celebration at Carnegie Hall; the Axiom ensemble explored Messaien's musical depiction of Utah's canyons; and Katherine Whyte gave the 2008 Alice Tully Vocal Arts Debut Recital.
