This year’s Focus! festival, directed by Joel Sachs, explored a century of music from California. Among the composers featured was John Adams, who gave a preconcert talk and also conducted his opera The Death of Klinghoffer in a semistaged version that brought the festival to a close. (Pictured here are cast members Jennifer Hines, who played Marilyn Klinghoffer; Nicholas Pallesen, who was her husband, Leon; and Paul La Rosa portrayed the terrorist, Rambo.) Other recent distinguished visitors to the School included pianist Richard Goode, who gave a master class; trumpeter Terence Blanchard, who performed with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra; Franz Welser-Möst, who led the Juilliard Orchestra in a reading; and world percussionist Valerie Naranjo, who enlightened students about West African musical traditions.
