Residence Hall Special Interest Groups
Meet people, enjoy activities, and enhance your Juilliard experience! The Green Group:
This group seeks to make The Juilliard School more environmentally aware, establish programs and ongoing initiatives that inspire responsible change, and serve as a sounding board and common ground for students who share concerns about the environment. Among its many missions, last year the Green Group met with dining hall officials to discuss green packaging options, hosted educational programs about Juilliard and Lincoln Center recycling procedures, cosponsored a residence hall “yard sale” at the end of the school year (with the Helping Hands group), and inspired the use of recycled paper for the majority of residence hall signage. Staff leaders for 2009-10 are Gabrielle Salvatto (third-year dance), Macy Sullivan (second-year dance), and Katie Wells (fourth-year dance). Health and Fitness:
Our first live-in Special Interest Group, the Health and Fitness S.I. begins 2009-10 with its own floor (21), located just below the fitness center. The Health and Fitness group hosts a number of programs educating residents on new and standard practices of general health and fitness. It also meets to watch sporting events, sign-up for morning and afternoon running groups, and can often be found playing basketball or tennis around the neighborhood. Staff leaders for 2009-10 are Bryan Carter (second-year jazz drums), Faylotte Crayton (fourth-year vocal performance), and LeBaron McClary (fourth-year dance). Helping Hands:
Formerly known as “Community Service and Activism,” Helping Hands is another returning group committed to finding opportunities for community service and awareness for students. In 2008-09, this group hosted a number of events including a residence hall voter registration drive, food and clothing drives, and an amazing visit to the local Humane Society office. Staff leaders for 2009-10 are Stephanie Chen (third-year piano), Jessica Costello (fifth-year vocal performance), and Hanah Stuart (fourth-year violin). Professional Transitions:
Our Professional Transitions S.I. focuses on life for the students beyond their senior year. They have hosted mock networking mixers, provided information and resources for resumes and head shots (followed by a “Crazy Head Shots” competition), and hosted members of the Juilliard faculty and staff covering a wide range of topics from career exploration to yoga for musicians. Staff leaders for 2009-10 are Alexey Koltakov (second-year piano), Kelly Robotham (fourth-year dance), and Jeffrey Sykes (third-year dance). Spirituality:
New to 2009-10, the Spirituality group is here by popular demand following a successful series of spiritual programs and impromptu holiday gatherings in the community. This group hopes to recognize, discuss, and explore topics of religion, ideology, self-awareness, and holistic healing in an environment that is accepting of all students! Staff leaders for 2009-10 are Kelly Csillam (fourth-year horn), Grace Song (third-year dance), and Stuart Stephenson (third-year trumpet).
