Recent Events for September 2010
In keeping with Juilliard tradition, the annual Shakespeare productions, performed in repertory by third-year drama students, were staged on Juilliard’s Globe Theatre-inspired set, modeled after the legendary London stage where many of Shakespeare’s plays were first performed. Director Ralph Zito set Macbeth in Afghanistan, highlighting themes of war and morality in a performance that showcased unusual but fitting production choices. Pictured are Gayle Rankin as Lady Macbeth and Corey Antonio Hawkins in the title role. Other events included a visit with France's first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy; a concert by the Juilliard Orchestra led by conductor Xian Zhang; a tribute to David Soyer; a recital by Gregory DeTurck, winner of the 2010 William Petschek Piano Debut Recital Award; and, among others, the New York recital debut of the School's graduate quartet-in-residence, the Afiara String Quartet.
