By KATHRYN SHATTUCK It is the kind of pinch-me moment theatrical lore is riddled with:
the last-minute call to stand in for a celebrated director in a production that could catapult a career. And yet the mood was bittersweet when, in late July, Jade King
Carroll (pictured) was asked to replace Israel Hicks at the helm of the Juilliard
Drama Division presentation of A Raisin in the Sun. More... By EVAN FEIN The Sydney Conservatorium of Music Chamber Orchestra begins its North
American tour with a collaborative concert at Juilliard on October 18,
featuring a combined orchestra of students from both institutions. The
34 visiting musicians will sit side-by-side with their local
counterparts to present a program of Australian and American music, with
both S.C.M.O.’s music director, Imre Palló (pictured), and Juilliard’s resident
conductor, James DePreist, conducting portions of the concert in Alice
Tully Hall. More... By EVAN FEIN Axiom, Juilliard’s
newest new music ensemble, will begin the season with a pair of
concerts devoted to exploring the music of Magnus Lindberg (pictured) and the
composers who influenced him. Now in its sixth season, the ensemble
has given dozens of performances of the staples and hidden gems of 20th-
and 21st-century repertoire. The centerpiece of Axiom’s season opening concert on October 11 is the Juilliard premiere of Lindberg’s work Joy (1990), the last of a triptych of works for orchestra that also includes Kinetics (1988) and Marea (1989). More... By LUKE CONKLIN After a successful first year, the new Historical
Performance program begins this year with continued
growth both in terms of size and scope of activities. The program, begun
with 13 students last year, has grown to its expected standard
complement of 24 masters and graduate diploma students. While
maintaining its current core of major instruments offered, the program
has also expanded to offer secondary lessons in Baroque trumpet, horn,
and viola da gamba. The student ensemble of the program, Juilliard415,
will begin its second season with a concert on October 7 in the Peter
Jay Sharp Theater. More... By TONI MARIE MARCHIONI Each year, Juilliard’s Vocal Arts Department showcases some of its most
promising singers in a special solo appearance at Lincoln Center. The
winners of this year’s Vocal Arts Honors Recital, mezzo-soprano Cecelia
Hall (pictured), an Artist Diploma student, and baritone John Brancy, a fourth-year
undergraduate, will be featured on a duo recital October 6 in the Peter
Jay Sharp Theater. More...
