Juilliard String Quartet Announces a New First Violinist

Joseph Lin (pictured) will become the first violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet in 2011, Juilliard President Joseph W. Polisi announced on October 20. Tully Organ Rededicated at 3 Concerts

Alice Tully Hall will once again resound to the music of its magnificent pipe organ in three November concerts. On November 16, the newly renovated organ will be rededicated by Paul Jacobs (pictured), chair of Juilliard’s organ department. Jacobs’s recital, part of the new annual White Light Festival at Lincoln Center, will feature the Clavier-Übung (Part III) by J.S. Bach, a masterpiece rarely heard in its entirety. More...

Desire Running Rampant

“Pray, defeated Virtue be gone!” Thus begins Claudio Monteverdi’s final opera, L’Incoronazione di Poppea, in which greed and lust are rewarded and the powers of the goddess Virtue are overcome by the powers of Cupid. The upcoming production of Poppea, which opens on November 17, represents the first collaboration between Juilliard Opera and the new Historical Performance program. Insanity and Genius Take the Stage in Proof

“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it, actually. I think the reading was the first time I’ve sat and listened to the play for probably five or six years.” The speaker is playwright David Auburn, and the “it” he refers to is his Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Proof, which will be directed by Harris Yulin (pictured) and performed by the fourth-year drama class from November 11 to 15 in the Stephanie P. N.J.E. Spotlights Music From Italy, China, and the U.S.

The planning process for new music concerts can lead to some unexpected adventures. The New Juilliard Ensemble’s concert on Friday, November 12, in Alice Tully Hall, with a nice mixture of music from Italy, China, and the United States, presented an interesting variety of challenges, all with happy endings (thankfully).
