On March 11, we woke to the news that northeastern Japan had experienced a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and that a tsunami was on the way. In the following days, the news only got worse as problems with nuclear power stations began to unfold. ‘Dr. Nic’ Unlocks the Mysteries of Juilliard’s Percussion Trove

In the heart of Juilliard’s third floor, behind locked doors that just a handful of people have keys to, lies a world where boys (sometimes shirtless) and the occasional girl run around making music by hitting things. Broken glass, 6-foot wooden boxes, tambourines ... the list goes on as new “instruments” are always being invented. Building in the Big Easy: ARTreach New Orleans Turns 5

When the 30 Juilliard students/neophyte builders arrived at 1839 Allen Street in New Orleans at 7:30 a.m. on a March Tuesday, there was little more than a concrete foundation at the site. By 3:15 p.m. the following Thursday, a floor, a staircase, and at least a dozen walls had been erected. Some of the work was backbreaking, but the soreness was worth it to see the gratitude on the faces of the family that will one day call the house home. More...
