Kommilitonen! An Opera For Students, About Students

Three tales of 20th-century student unrest—in Nazi Germany, Mississippi in the 1960s, and China during the Cultural Revolution—are the subject of Kommilitonen!, the Peter Maxwell Davies opera that has its U.S. premiere at Juilliard November 16. This Juilliard-Royal Academy of Music commission, directed by its librettist, David Poutney, also features lifesize puppets operated by the singers.     More...

Choreographers and Composers Join Forces

Each year, through a competitive application process, six pairs of third-year Juilliard dance students collaborate with mostly third-year composition majors on the creation of six original works for dance and music. Losier Is Alice Tully Vocal Arts Debut Recitalist

The annual Alice Tully Vocal Arts Debut Recital is one of the highest profile recitals at Juilliard; it also provides an opportunity to launch the recital career of an already accomplished vocalist. This year’s winner, mezzo-soprano Michèle Losier (Artist Diploma ’06, opera studies), will combine her recital with a month at the Metropolitan Opera as Siébel in Gounod’s Faust. Pintscher Makes His Juilliard Orchestra Debut

Arguably the most successful composer of his generation, Matthias Pintscher’s résumé reads like many musicians’ wish lists, with works commissioned and performed by major performing arts institution in Europe and North America. The 40-year-old will make his debut conducting the Juilliard Orchestra on November 5 in a concert that includes his own music as well as works by Debussy, Ravel, and Hindemith.  More...

Juilliard Running Ensemble Is On Its Feet

Juilliard and athletics have never been synonymous, to say the least, although tales of past athletic activity—badminton, basketball, hockey, ping-pong, and tennis—periodically surface. The softball team strives valiantly and festively. Juilliard bikers have participated in rides that raised funds for multiple sclerosis research.
