The Juilliard Manuscript Collection Comes Home

The School's manuscript collection—which counts among its holdings documents from composers such as Bach, Debussy, Schumann, Stravinsky, Wagner, and others—now resides in the Scholars Reading Room, a brand new space across the hall from the library. In addition to these returned treasures, Juilliard Chairman Bruce Kovner has donated a vocal score of Mendelssohn's Elijah (right) and Beethoven's corrected manuscript of the "Kreutzer" Sonata.  More...

Renée Fleming: A Class Act

Soprano Renée Fleming, who graduated from Juilliard in 1987, held court at a master class in the Peter Jay Sharp Theater on October 20. Fleming follows in the footsteps of other notable artists such as Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti, and Leontyne Price, who also gave master classes at the School. Students Paul Appleby, Emalie Savoy, Cecelia Hall, and Lei Xu presented music for the class, accompanied by pianists Nathan Brandwein and Natalia Katyukova. Benjamin Sosland reports. More...

Opera Opens With Handel’s Ariodante

Handel's Ariodante premiered in London in 1735 to great success, but fell into obscurity for some 200 years—eventually making a comeback in the 1970s. This month, Juilliard Opera, directed by Stephen Wadsworth (right) and conducted by Gary Thor Wedow, will perform this masterpiece. With a plot driven by love, rivalry, deceit, and confessions, Wadsworth and his team focus on the psychology of the players' interpersonal relationships.   More...
