3 Actors Prepare: Getting Ready for the 4th-Year Rep

This year’s fourth-year drama repertory season (February 15-26) spans three centuries and three continents with alumnus Orlando Pabotoy’s The World in the Moon, Athol Fugard’s 1989 My Children! My Africa!, and Annie Baker’s 2009 Circle Mirror Transformation. The Journal asked one actor from each play to keep a log of his or her experiences preparing for their roles. More...

Board Chair Kovner Gives $20 Million to Juilliard

A $20 million gift to The Juilliard School from its chairman, Bruce Kovner, was announced on January 17. The exceptionally generous gift to the endowment (worth $762 million at the end of 2011), was earmarked for the School’s Historical Performance program. It ensures that the operating costs of the two-year-old program will be fully funded in perpetuity.  More...

The Met and Juilliard Pair Up for Armide

The second joint production between Juilliard and the Metropolitan Opera takes place this month with two semistaged concert performances of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Armide. Led by conductor Jane Glover and director Fabrizio Melano, the production showcases some of today’s most promising young opera singers, with a cast drawn from current members and alumni of the Met’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program and Juilliard vocal arts students. Alumni Center Stage

Since Juilliard’s forerunner, the Institute of Musical Art, opened its doors, families have been a strong force at the School—among the first students to enroll in October 1905 were sisters Mary and Jeanette Crabtree, who both studied the piano for three years. It’s not surprising: family ties are potent enough to direct many of the decisions we all make, and sharing a passion for the arts with a parent, sibling, or spouse may add deeper meaning and depth to the pursuit. This year’s edition of Center Stage is dedicated to the families that have not only shared Juilliard but also the mysterious combination of qualities and experiences that make a performer.

Ogren Debuts With Wind and Brass Concert

At 32, conductor and composer Jayce Ogren already has an impressive list of accomplishments to his credit. In addition to his tenure as assistant conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra (2006-2009), Ogren has appeared with the BBC Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, and Los Angeles Philharmonic. February 9 marks his debut with the Juilliard Orchestra in a program of works for winds, brass, and percussion. More...
