Phil Schaap, born in New York, has been a jazz faculty member since 2006. He directs Swing University, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s adult education program. Since 1970, Schaap has broadcast jazz on the radio stations WKCR at Columbia University, WNYC in New York, and WBGO in Newark, N.J., as well as for NPR. Most familiar is his daily show, Bird Flight, on Charlie Parker. Before becoming curator at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Schaap had a successful career producing, remastering, and writing for record companies such as Universal, Sony, and PolyGram. He was archivist at the Savoy Jazz label from 1984-1991. His productions have garnered many Grammy Awards, including three for producing, three for historical writing, and two for audio engineering. As an educator, he taught graduate-level jazz at Columbia and Rutgers Universities. His undergraduate teaching career is highlighted by 14 years at Princeton University.
