Violinist Sheryl Staples, born in Los Angeles, has been principal associate concertmaster with the New York Philharmonic since 1998. She has played solo performances with more than 45 orchestras nationwide including the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the San Diego Symphony, Richmond Symphony, and Louisiana Philharmonic. She has given chamber music performances in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and Central and South America. Festivals she has taught at include La Jolla Music Society’s Summerfest, Boston Chamber Music Society, Salt Bay Chamberfest, Santa Fe, Mainly Mozart, Seattle, Aspen, Sarasota, and Martha’s Vineyard. Staples was the gold prize winner at the Stulberg International Competition in 1987. She was previously associate concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra and a violin faculty member at the Cleveland Institute of Music, U.S.C. Thornton School of Music, and Colburn School of Performing Arts. She is on the faculty at Manhattan School of Music. Staples received her Artist Diploma from U.S.C. Thornton School of Music. She studied violin with Robert Lipsett. Heiichiro Ohyama was a mentor of hers. Staples has taught at Juilliard since 2004 and in the Pre-College Division since 2015.
