General Information

How are students selected for the program?
Students are selected on the basis of an application, an audition, a teacher recommendation, a music aptitude test, and a parent interview. The most important factors are the student's enthusiasm and the results of his or her audition.

Are public and private school students eligible?
Yes. All public school or private school students in the five boroughs are eligible to audition, as long as they have played an orchestral instrument or piano for six months or more.

Is there an age limit?
Yes. Students must be in the third through eighth grades (approximately 8 to 14 years old) at the time of their audition. The exception to this rule is that most trombone, trumpet, tuba, horn, and bassoon players are eligible beyond the eighth grade. Students generally begin studying these instruments in junior high or beyond. Students are also required to have had some introductory training on their chosen instrument before coming to MAP.

Can students audition on any instrument?
No. Students may audition on the piano or any traditional orchestral instrument. Those include violin, viola, cello, double bass, percussion, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, French horn, trombone, trumpet, and tuba. Saxophone, guitar, and voice are not eligible.

Do you have to own an instrument to be in MAP?
No. For students who need them, instruments (except piano) are rented for the duration of their enrollment in MAP.

How much does MAP cost?
Tuition is charged on a sliding scale, based solely on the family's financial situtaion. Many families will be charged no more than $1,650, while others may be charged up to the actual cost of the program per student, which is $4,300.

When are MAP auditions, and what should students play?
Applications for admission to MAP are sent out in late January, and are due by May 1. Parents must fill out a financial aid application, and attach a copy of their most recent tax return or proof of public assistance.

Auditions take place the last week in May. Students will be mailed an audition date and time by the middle of May. Students should bring their instruments to the audition and be prepared to play one selection with which they feel comfortable. Students may be asked to play a scale, sight-read music, answer a few questions, and take a music aptitute test. Parents will have an interview with the director or assistant director of the program.

Some students will be asked back for the second part of the admission process. On the last Saturday during audition week, parents and students will be required to attend an interview conducted by a member of the administration. (An interview does not guarantee admittance to the program.) Only those students with complete files (an application, teacher recommendation form, financial aid application, and tax form) will be considered.

When are classes held?
MAP takes place every Saturday of the academic year (September through May), except on holidays and school breaks. The MAP day usually lasts from about 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Students may be enrolled for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years. After completing MAP, students are encouraged to continue their musical study at a community music school, or in a related program at Juilliard.
