Pianist and current Juilliard student Ian Parker makes his Juilliard William Petscheck Recital Debut in Alice Tully Hall on Thursday, April 4 at 8 PM. He performs Clementi's Sonata #5 in F-sharp Minor, Op. 25; Chopin's Nocturne in B Major, Op. 62 #1; Louie's Memories in an Ancient Garden (from Scenes from a Jade Terrace); Bartók's Szabadban ("Out of Doors"); and the Brahms Sonata No. 3 in F Minor, Op. 5. Mr. Parker steps in for Juilliard pianistTerrence Wilson, who was originally schedule to perform on April 4 but has cancelled his appearance this year due to a death in his family. Mr. Wilson will perform hisWilliam Petschek Piano Recital in 2003.

The Juilliard William Petschek Piano Recital Award was established through the generosity of the William Petschek Charitable Trust to assist in launching the careers of young pianists. Distinguished past recipients have included John Root, Panayis Lyras, Jon Kimura Parker, Hai-Kyung Suh, Jeffrey Biegel, Eduardus Halim, Ick Choo Moon, Robert Benz, Pedja Muzijevic, Akira Eguchi, Jennifer Hayghe, Frederic Chiu, Shu-Ching Evelyn Chen, Ju-Ying Song, Jeremy Denk, and the late Gregory Slag and James Barbagallo.
Ian Parker has appeared as a soloist with Canada's leading orchestras and has given recitals across North America, Western Europe, and Israel. Most recently, Mr. Parker claimed the First Prize of the 2001 CBC National Radio Competition, as well as grand prizes at the Canadian National Music Festival, Corpus Christi International, and Montreal Symphony Orchestra competitions. As two-time winner of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition at The Juilliard School, Mr. Parker has performed live on WQXR (hosted by Robert Sherman). He also is heard regularly on CBC Radio Canada. During the upcoming season, Mr. Parker will perform with the symphony orchestras of Toronto, Winnipeg, Waterloo, and l'Orchestre Metropolitan du Grand Montreal. His schedule also includes a recital tour with Debut Atlantic and with Jeunesses Musicales du Canada.
Born in 1978 into a family of pianists, Mr. Parker began his piano studies at age 3 with his father, Edward J. Parker. He spent several summers under the tutelage of Marek Jablonski at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Mr. Parker also has attended the Ravinia Festival, Music Academy of the West, and Tel Hai in Israel. For two consecutive years, the Canada Council for the Arts has awarded Mr. Parker an educational grant to study with Yoheved Kaplinsky at The Juilliard School. The Council also awarded him the Sylva Gelber Career Grant, which is given annually to the most talented Canadian artist. A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Ian Parker resides in New York. Next month, he will receive a master of music degree from The Juilliard School, where he also earned his undergraduate degree. While at Juilliard, he has received numerous scholarships including the Richard S. Becker Scholarship, the Joseph Lauro Rollino Memorial Scholarship in Piano, the Juilliard Alumni Scholarship, and the Maro and Anahid Ajemian Scholarship.
