Juilliard's Music and Dance Divisions Unite for "Composers & Choreographers...Plus," a collaborative series featuring new works by student composers and choreographers, on Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 8 in The Peter Jay Sharp Theater

"Composers & Choreographers" premieres six dances with new music performed live,..."Plus" the best student choreographic work of the season


Juilliard’s annual series Composers & Choreographers…PLUS takes place Friday, Dec. 7 at 8 PM and Saturday, December 8 at 3 PM and 8 PM at the school’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater (155 W. 65th St.), will showcase energizing works produced by six pairs of students from the Composition Department and Dance Division.  The collaborations offer unexpected new directions and a melting pot of ideas. Juilliard faculty members Elizabeth Keen (dance) and Daniel Ott (music) serve as advisors for the new works with Jerome Begin (dance) as a consultant.

For each piece, one third-year dancer is paired with one graduate-level composer.  This year, the composer-choreographer teams are Jakub Ciupinski and Esmé Boyce; Ted Goldman and Charlotte Bydwell; Reinaldo Moya and Nathan Madden; Cristina Spinei and Evan Teitelbaum; Alexandra du Bois and Spenser Theberge; and Evan Fein and Yara Travieso.  The program also features the best student choreographic work from the fall semester.  Performances are free and no tickets are required.  For more information, please call the Juilliard Box Office (212) 769-7406 or visit www.juilliard.edu.

Composer Jakub Ciupinski hails from Krakow, Poland where he graduated from the Academy of Music.  Mr. Ciupinski’s compositions have been showcased throughout Europe and North America and his Oratorio for the Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust has been performed by the Symphony Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Krakow, the Cracow Chamber Choir and the Boys Choir of the Cracow Philharmonic. 

Choreographer and dancer Esmé Boyce, originally from Chicago, IL, studied in Los Angeles with Meredith Baylis and Glenn Edgerton. Esmé has attended numerous summer programs, the most recent being the scholarship program at the Lou Conte Dance Studio, home of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and Ballet British Columbia’s Summer Intensive.

Composer Edward Goldman, a New York City native, received his undergraduate degree from Columbia University before studying at Juilliard.  His compositions, which have been performed by counter)induction, The Contrasts Quartet and Jazz Band Classic, range from orchestral and chamber music to pop songs and jazz charts.  Mr. Goldman hosts a weekly radio program on WKCR 89.9 FM-NY.

Choreographer and dancer Charlotte Bydwell of Montreal, Quebec received choreographic honors from the Montreal Ceccheti Choreography Competition and has continued to create while training at Ballet Divertimento and Juilliard.  This past summer, Ms. Bydwell represented Canada on scholarship at the Impulstanz Festival in Vienna.

Composer Reinaldo Moya received his bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University where he has conducted the Collegium Musicum.  His compositions have been performed at MoMA’s Summergarden and the Akademie der Kunste in Berlin, and his first symphony was honored in the ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers’ Competition.  As a violinist, he was a founding member of the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela.

Choreographer and dancer Nathan Madden studied with Arnold Spohr of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Robert Ivey in Charleston South Carolina.  He attended the schools of Atlanta Ballet and Houston Ballet and has performed and choreographed for a number of musical theater productions throughout the country.

Composer Cristina Spinei’s compositions have been commissioned by the ETA3 Trio, the Ebony Strings Quartet, St. John’s Church, Treetops Chamber Music Society, London Central School and Keynote Dancers.  She recently won the Juilliard orchestral composition contest and was named a finalist for the international Sackler Composition Prize.  Mr. Spinei is a composer-in-residence with the Metropolis Ensemble.

Choreographer and dancer Evan Teitelbaum grew up in New York City where he received his dance training at the Alvin Ailey School, Studio Maestro and the Jacquelyn Kennedy Onassis School at the American Ballet Theatre.  His summer dance studies include Bates Dance Festival, The Paul Taylor School, Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and Jacob’s Pillow.

Composer Alexandra du Bois’ compositions have been performed at venues such as the Théâtre de la Ville, The Concertgebouw, Barbican Hall and Carnegie Hall.  She was a composer-in-residence at Dartmouth College, Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, Merkin Hall and the Mammoth Lakes Music Festival and has received commissions from the Kronos Quartet, the Beaux Arts Trio, Bang on a Can, Bargemusic, Merkin Hall and violinist Daniel Hope with the Savannah Music Festival, among others.

Choreographer and dancer Spenser Theberge originally from Vancouver, Washington, attended the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics.  He has been honored as a Presidential Scholar in the Arts and a winner of the NFAA youngARTS program.  Mr. Theberge also received training from the Columbia Dance Center and Ann Reinking’s Broadway Theatre Project.

Composer Evan Fein of Cleveland, Ohio completed his undergraduate degree at the Cleveland Institute of music.  He was a composer-in-residence for the Canton Symphony Orchestra and has received honors from the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs and ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composers’ Competition.  An active pianist, Mr. Fein won second place in the piano duo division of the 2007 Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition.

Choreographer and dancer, Yara Travieso was born in Miami, Florida where she began her dance training in flamenco.  She graduated from New World School of the Arts High School Dance Department and studied choreography with Daniel Nagrin.  In the summer of 2005 she co-founded the Borscht Film Festival, a nonprofit, Miami-based event.
