Juilliard Jazz announces its inaugural Juilliard Summer Jazz Residency from June 16-20, 2008 to be held in Atlanta, Georgia at the North Atlanta High School Center for the Arts. The one-week intensive jazz program is designed for high school and middle school students, from ages 11-18, who are dedicated, disciplined, and passionate about jazz. The program, with courses to be taught by Juilliard Jazz faculty and its most advanced students, gives young jazz musicians a taste of what a Juilliard Jazz student’s life is all about: refining technique, performance, and broadening understanding of various jazz styles.
The faculty for the program includes Juilliard Jazz Artistic Director and drummer, Carl Allen, Juilliard Jazz faculty member and bassist, Ben Wolfe, and Juilliard Jazz students, trombonist James Burton, trumpeter Christopher Burbank, and pianist Kristopher L. Bowers. Young middle school and high school musicians studying saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, double bass, electric bass, or drums will be accepted into the program.
The daily schedule for Middle School students (ages 11-13) begins with a listening session, followed by lessons and a musicianship class, two Big Band sessions, individual practice, and a jam session. The week concludes with a concert on Friday, June 20 at 6 PM. High School students (ages 14-18) start their day with lessons and a musicianship class, then individual practice, small ensembles/combo, listening sessions, a Big Band session, and jam session. A concert on Friday, June 20 at 6 PM also concludes their week of study.
The 2007-08 season marks the 7th anniversary of Juilliard Jazz. Juilliard offers an undergraduate jazz degree, awarding a bachelor of music degree to those completing its four-year curriculum; a two-year master of music degree program designed for advanced performers who want to maximize their professional opportunities, onstage, and in the academic world; and an advanced pre-professional curriculum leading to an Artist Diploma, offered through the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies -- a collaboration between Juilliard and Jazz at Lincoln Center. All Juilliard Jazz curricula offer equal opportunities for student performance and specially tailored studio coursework. Juilliard Jazz ensembles frequently tour, throughout the school year and during school breaks.
Last season, the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra and Juilliard Jazz Ensembles traveled to Doha, Qatar, the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, Missouri, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and performed at the IAJE conference. In summer 2007, they traveled to Snow College in Utah, the Costa Rica International Jazz Festival, the Vitoria Jazz Festival (Vitoria, Spain), the Craftsbury Festival in Vermont, and the Detroit Jazz and Heritage Festival. This season, the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra toured Aiken, South Carolina, and Juilliard Jazz Ensembles traveled to St. Louis, Missouri. Carl Allen is Artistic Director of Juilliard Jazz Studies, and Laurie Carter is Executive Director at Juilliard Jazz Studies.
