Juilliard Pianist Di Wu Wins the 2009 William Petschek Recital Award

Juilliard pianist, Chinese-born Di Wu, has won the School’s 2009 William Petschek Piano Recital award and will be presented in solo performance at Alice Tully Hall on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 8 PM (program to be announced at a later date). Ms. Wu, who was born in Nanjing and raised in Xiamen, is currently in her second year of the Artist Diploma program at Juilliard, which is a post-master’s level program designed for highly gifted and experienced performers; the program is equivalent of the doctoral level.

The William Petschek Piano Recital award was established more than 25 years ago, through the generosity of the William Petschek Charitable Trust, to assist in launching the careers of young pianists. Previous winners have included Hinrich Alpers, Frederic Chiu, Jeremy Denk, Akira Eguchi, Soyeon Lee, Predrag Muzijevic, Jon Kimura Parker, Elizabeth Joy Roe, Konstantin Soukhovetski, and Orion Weiss, among others.

Highlights of Ms. Wu’s 2008-09 season include re-engagements with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat, Op. 19, and the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, playing Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 15. Ms. Wu also makes her debut at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in the recital program, An Evening with Ravel, and will give recitals in Arizona, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. She recently appeared on Chicago’s WFMT program, "Live from WFMT."

Ms. Wu made her professional debut at age fourteen with the Beijing Philharmonic. Since then, she has performed with various U.S. orchestras, including the Pittsburgh Symphony, National Symphony, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and twice with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. She also has toured Europe, presenting recitals at festivals such as Mozart Gesellschaft Dortmund, Klavier Festival Ruhr, Busoni International Piano Festival, and at venues such as Musée d’Orsay and Musée de Grenoble.

In 2007-08, Ms. Wu made her debut with the Terre Haute and Bryan symphony orchestras, performing Grieg’s Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16. She also presented the recital program, “The Art of Transcription,” in more than 25 concerts that took place in 10 U.S. states and included a debut tour in California.
       
Ms. Wu recently won the 2007 National Audition held by Astral Artists and now is represented by them. Astral Artists was founded in 1992 by Vera Wilson to provide a career bridge between the conservatory and the professional stage for young classical musicians. Artists are provided with career development resources and artistic support necessary for success on and off the traditional concert stage. As the first prize winner of the 2005 Hilton Head International Piano Competition, Ms. Wu made her NYC solo debut in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in November 2005.

Born in Nanjing, China, and raised in Xiamen, Ms. Wu moved to the United States in 1999 to study with Zenon Fishbein at the Manhattan School of Music. She moved to Philadelphia a year later to study with Gary Graffman at the Curtis Institute of Music. After completing her undergraduate education at Curtis, Ms. Wu moved to New York City to study at Juilliard with Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky. She recently obtained her master’s of music degree from Juilliard and is currently in the Artist Diploma program, studying with Joseph Kalichstein and Robert McDonald.
