New Juilliard Residency in Aiken, South Carolina includes Jazz and Classical Performances Plus Outreach into Area Schools by Juilliard Student, Faculty, and Alumni Musicians, March 9-13, 2009

HIstoric 'Joye Cottage' Becomes Center for First Five-Day Juilliard in Aiken Festival Comprised of Six Jazz and Classical Music Performances, and Six Workshops, Demonstrations, and Master Classes in the Schools

The Juilliard School and the co-owners of Joye Cottage in Aiken, South Carolina  -  authors Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith - announce the first five-day Juilliard in Aiken festival to take place Monday - Friday, March 9 - 13, 2009. The residency by Juilliard music faculty, students, and alumni from both the classical and jazz departments includes six performances and a series of workshops, master classes and demonstration/coachings for young musicians in twelve schools throughout Aiken County. This first of what is hoped to become an annual event is funded by individual and corporate sponsors, and capitalizes on Juilliard's unique expertise in music performance education, and its experience in educational outreach in the arts.

Among the Juilliard participants in the 2009 Juilliard in Aiken festival are the members of the noted American Brass Quintet, a resident performing and teaching quintet at Juilliard since 1987; the Biava Quartet, Juilliard's graduate, resident string quartet; and twelve current and alumni Juilliard musicians, two of whom have completed teaching/performing fellowships in the prestigious Academy - a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education. Others have participated in some of the ten community outreach programs that Juilliard administers on its own. Almost all the Aiken County schools to be visited are part of South Carolina's public education system, and many of them are federally designated as Title I schools.

In announcing plans for Juilliard in Aiken, Juilliard President Joseph W. Polisi said, "I speak on behalf of the entire Juilliard community in expressing our enormous gratitude to Steve and Greg for their exceptional generosity of spirit in developing the Juilliard in Aiken festival, and in making the historic Joye Cottage accessible to Juilliard musicians, and in the future, actors and dancers as well. Nurturing young artists and the art they produce is an essential element of the American experience.  We look forward to developing  programs that will be as much a benefit to the Aiken community as they are to those future generations of Juilliard artists."

Joye Cottage is a sixty-room, restored, 19th-century former Whitney-Vanderbilt seasonal home on several acres of land in an area that still remains a winter equestrian and polo center.  Since 2003 musicians from Juilliard have been giving March performances in the Aiken area. In particular, since 2005 the Juilliard Jazz ensembles and big band have given weekend concerts and outreach performances in Aiken, expanding in 2008 to a five-day program that included concerts, clinics, and outreach. In 2007, Juilliard's Volando String Quartet gave well received performances in Aiken, and worked with Schofield Middle School's string students, culminating in their first side-by-side concert. With this past experience, the Juilliard in Aiken festival formalizes and expands those programs to include the larger Aiken area, a wider array of musical repertoire,  and notably more schools in a region where there exist demonstrably vibrant music programs. In addition, Juilliard performers and teachers are taking their craft outside the New York metropolitan area, especially important during a time when the cost of touring has become prohibitive.

Mr. Naifeh and Mr. Smith graciously described their generous offering by saying, "Our gift to Juilliard is nothing compared to Juilliard's gift to the world. And we are fortunate, indeed, to live in a community that shares our support for arts education and our belief, which is Juilliard's belief, that the pursuit of excellence - in the arts, as in everything - can truly improve lives."

In addition to school visits throughout the county, Juilliard in Aiken will utilize the major performance venues in the Aiken area, including theaters in downtown Aiken and at the University of South Carolina, Aiken First Presbyterian Church, the County Historical Society, and Joye Cottage itself.

The festival's starting day, Monday March 9, begins with the first of four days of classical string instruction by Juilliard teaching artists at Schofield Middle School, and instruction in jazz techniques at Schofield and Aiken middle schools, concluding with an invitation-only concert that night at Joye Cottage, featuring chamber works by Brahms and Ravel as well as selections from song literature.  (Detailed programming follows at the end of the release.)

The following day, Tuesday, March 10, features a workshop by the American Brass Quintet members - Raymond Mase and Kevin Cobb, trumpets, David Wakefield, horn, Michael Powell, trombone, and John Rojak, bass trombone -- for approximately seventy brass students from Aiken and Sliver Bluff high schools as well as the Aiken Preparatory School, taking place at downtown Aiken's Washington Center for the Performing Arts. Later that evening, the Etherredge Center at USC Aiken is the site for an ‘early curtain' Juilliard Jazz Kids Bop family concert. Appropriate for school-age children, this interactive introduction to jazz is free for students and $5 for adults.

On Wednesday, March 11, singers from three area schools - North Augusta High School and Middle School, and Paul Knox Middle School - will attend an opera and song demonstration/coaching taking place at North Augusta High School, where two local students will prepare selections from Italian vocal literature for coaching. The lawn of Joye Cottage is the scene that afternoon of a performance by the American Brass Quintet.

The schedule on Thursday, March 12, includes a jazz workshop at LBC (Langley Bath Clearwater) Middle School, and two concert performances. The Biava Quartet, who in May will conclude their two-year tenure as teaching assistants to the famed Juilliard String Quartet, perform at Aiken First Presbyterian Church as part of the church's Mid-Day Music Series; pianist Elizabeth Joy Roe's solo recital at the Aiken County Historical Museum closes the evening.

On Friday morning, March 13, the string players of Schofield Middle School get to demonstrate the results of their week-long instruction, performing a Side-by-Side Concert with their Juilliard string teachers, as well as the members of the Biava Quartet.  That night, all the residency musicians perform in a Juilliard Showcase Concert taking place at Washington Center for the Performing Arts, officially concluding the 2009 festival, Juilliard in Aiken. The concert includes instrumental works by Ravel and Brahms, a selection of jazz standards, arias, and songs by Gershwin and Porter.
