Conductor Nicholas McGegan has made his name as someone with a healthy respect for – but a certain distance – from the early-music tastemakers of his native England during his longtime appointments with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in San Francisco, Germany’s International Handel-Festival Göttingen, Sweden’s Drottningholm Theatre, the Milwaukee Symphony, and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. In 2007-08, he made appearances with the BBC Scottish Symphony, the Atlanta Symphony, made his debut with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Forth Worth Symphony, the Saint Louis Symphony, the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and led a performance of Handel’s Belshazzar with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. He made an appearance at the International Handel-Festival Göttingen, of which he has been the artistic director since 1991; he conducted the Handel Festival Orchestra in fully-stage performances of Handel’s Giulio Cesare and concert performances of Solomon. He also appeared at the Ravinia Festival, Aspen Music Festival, the Hollywood Bowl, and the Edinburgh International Festival. Mr. McGegan was educated at Cambridge and Oxford universities.

The next concert in the Juilliard Orchestra season takes place on Friday, October 10 at 8 PM in The Peter Jay Sharp Theater with conductor James DePreist leading the Juilliard Orchestra in Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 in C Major, Op. 61 and Dvorák’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major, Op. 88.
