The Juilliard School Announces Its 2009-2010 Performance Season of Almost 700 Dance, Drama, and Music Events - Most of Them Are Free

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

 

  • Guest conductors leading the Juilliard Orchestra include renowned artists such as Tan Dun, Alan Gilbert, Bernard Haitink, Nicholas McGegan, Anne Manson, Xian Zhang, Leonard Slatkin, Michael Tilson Thomas, Gary Thor Wedow and James DePreist, Director of Conducting and Orchestral Studies at Juilliard
  • World Premieres of works by Shih Hui Chen, Tan Dun, Shafer Mahoney, Chen Qigang, Augusta Read Thomas, Joan Tower, Ye Xiaogang, and Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky are scheduled, plus annual presentations of new works by Juilliard composers
  • Juilliard joins Lincoln Center's 50th Anniversary celebration with three special events
  • Juilliard's Dance Division presents four world premieres in New Dances: Editions 2009 created for Juilliard dancers by choreographers Andrea Miller, Fabien Prioville, Stijn Celis, and Aszure Barton, December 9 - 13; Juilliard Dances Repertory features works by acclaimed choreographers Merce Cunningham, Paul Taylor, and Jerome Robbins, March 24 - 28
  • Renowned soprano and Juilliard alumna Renée Fleming gives her first NYC master class,Tuesday, October 20 at the rededication of Juilliard's Peter Jay Sharp Theater; master class and reception is a benefit for Juilliard
  • Juilliard's Drama Division presents four fully-staged productions featuring graduating actors: George Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man, directed by Vivienne Benesch, October 21 - 25; John Patrick Stanley's Savage in Limbo directed by Pam MacKinnon, November 12 - 16; Bertolt Brecht's The Threepenny Opera, directed by Sam Gold, December 10 - 14; and The Americans, Part I, The Lay of the Land, directed by Brian Mertes, featuring works of Sam Shepard, February 11 - 15
  • Juilliard is partners with Carnegie Hall for Ancient Paths, Modern Voices celebrating Chinese culture: Carnegie Hall presents Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the Juilliard Orchestra, Wednesday, October 28 at Carnegie Hall in a program featuring a world premiere by Chen Qigang with pianist Lang Lang as soloist; Juilliard presents two additional concerts in partnership with Carnegie Hall: Tan Dun conducts the Juilliard Orchestra in an all-Tan Dun concert including the world premiere of his Violin Concerto; Juilliard faculty member and alumnus Cho-Liang Lin is soloist, Monday, October 26 in Alice Tully Hall; on Monday, November 9 in Alice Tully Hall, music director and conductor Joel Sachs leads the New Juilliard Ensemble in a concert of music by contemporary Chinese composers including the world premiere of a new work by Ye Xiaogang
  • Juilliard's Historical Performance program welcomes its first class of graduate musicians this fall; Juilliard Baroque, the School's newest faculty ensemble with members drawn from its teaching roster, debuts Tuesday, October 27 in Paul Hall; they perform again February 7 under the auspices of Music Before 1800; Public master classes with Emma Kirkby, Jordi Savall and William Christie and members of Les Arts Florissants, as well as student concerts, are scheduled throughout the season
  • Legendary pianist Alfred Brendel shares his viewpoint on music as a lecturer and musical coach in his first New York residency since retiring from the concert stage; the four-day residency includes two public events in Juilliard's Peter Jay Sharp Theater on Thursday, November 19 and Sunday, November 22; both are presented by Carnegie Hall in partnership with Juilliard
  • Juilliard Jazz presents an evening with Branford Marsalis on Tuesday, December 1 in Paul Hall and an evening with Christian McBride on Tuesday, February 2 in The Peter Jay Sharp Theater
  • Juilliard's 2009-2010 season opens with organist Paul Jacobs performing Bach's Six Trio Sonatas for Organ, September 15 in Paul Hall
  • FOCUS! 2010 Music at the Center: Composing an American Mainstream features works by American composers from the end of World War II to 1970, from Friday, January 22 through Sunday, January 30, and highlights composers William Schuman, Aaron Copland, Roy Harris, and Samuel Barber, among others; Juilliard alumnus Leonard Slatkin conducts the Juilliard Orchestra in a special coda to this season's FOCUS!, Thursday, April 1 in Avery Fisher Hall
  • New Juilliard Ensemble opens a three- concert series on September 26 with world premiere of Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky's Paths of Parables II: Woody Allen's Hasidic Tales with a Guide to Their Interpretation by the Noted Scholar with texts by Woody Allen, for narrator and chamber orchestra
  • Juilliard Opera presents Handel's Ariodante on November 11, 13 and 15; a concert version of Copland's The Tender Land on January 30; Conrad Susa's Tranformations on February 15, 17, and 19; and Poulenc's Dialogue of the Carmelites on April 21, 23 and 25

The Juilliard School, now in its 104th year, announces a season of almost 700 dance, drama, and music (classical and jazz) performances featuring Juilliard students, faculty, and special guest artists in 2009-2010. Almost all of these events are FREE and are open to the public; some carry a nominal charge.
