Like the rest of the nation, I have grieved and mourned at the horror and senselessness of the tragedy our nation has suffered. Being so far removed from N.Y.C. and D.C., it has been difficult to identify and define my emotions. My sadness and sense of loss seemed inappropriate when so many have been deeply, personally, and tragically affected. The worst emotion has been helplessness. The article about William Harvey’s moving and timely acts touched me deeply. I want him to know that it has helped so many of us to feel that, while our contributions (praying, giving blood and donations) may seem small, God has a plan and what we do, no matter how small it may seem to us, it can make a difference. Thank you, Mr. Harvey, for inspiring and comforting not only the members of the 69th, but so many more than you will ever know. God bless!

This is a thank-you to William Harvey for his article “Playing for the Fighting 69th.” It made me weep again for the tragedy that has changed all our lives. As William Harvey discovered, those of you who are musicians are as much practitioners of the healing arts as doctors and nurses. I am very grateful to Mr. Harvey and to all of you for the comfort you provided and continue to provide to all of us. We need music and music makers now more than ever. Thank you all.

I just want to compliment you on the new streamlined look and the wonderful articles of the October issue. I particularly enjoyed the William Harvey letter, describing his playing for all the exhausted firemen and other workers. I received that as an e-mail from the Principal Bass of Cleveland, Max Dimoff, so it has already received a wide audience around the U.S. Thank you.
