Music Advancement Program Hosts First Alumni Reunion

Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program (MAP) began in September 1991 to give African-American, Latino, and Native-American students from the New York City public schools a chance not only to learn an instrument but also to develop an understanding of the beauty and discipline associated with the art of music. It also gave the School an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to issues of inclusion and diversity in the world of the arts. Two MAP alums—Shawn Coleman, clarinetist, and Suzanne Morello, violist—reflect on what it means to have been a student in the program, and share their thoughts about the importance of outreach.
