Center Stage How are careers in the arts shaped? How do trends evolve? What takes place onstage is, of course, only half the story. While Juilliard alumni are world-famous as performing artists, a significant number of them make their marks in key positions behind the scenes—and have found rewarding, creative work in the process.
For our third edition of Center Stage, we focus on those Juilliard alumni who have become players of a different sort—running dance companies, orchestras, and theaters; shaping the films we watch and the recordings we listen to; managing artists; writing about the arts. Within these pages, they let us into the inner workings of the performing-arts world, sharing the vast expertise gained in careers that are no less essential for being out of the limelight.
In addition, we’ve asked alumni who are leaders in the industry to share their thoughts on what it takes to excel in those arenas that are very much in the public eye. We hope this issue intrigues and enlightens, and we applaud all those Juilliard alumni who contribute—through their resources, skills, and visions—to making the arts an integral part of our daily lives.
